AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR LOWER MIDDLE INCOME GROUP

Dholpur, Savar, 2022

The lower middle class, this standard of economic ability outweighs the economy, becoming the standard of social, cultural and even human capacity and status. Due to the gap between the supply and demand of urban life or the never-met gap between income and expenditure, the term "equity" is found only in the dictionary. And the word "lower middle class" became a symbol of all the inadequacies. Now, the question is, can we at least make a difference in the lives of the stakeholders of this project by making a housing for the "lower middle class"? At the very beginning, we refuse to accept this position of the lower middle class (class or standard of economic ability) as permanent. This housing system will not only give occupants a living space but will also serve as a major influencer of development in the quality of their lives. This housing, as a process not as a product, will serve as a framework for sustainable social, cultural and economic development. We have tried to bring about "progression" in both formal and spatial expressions of this project. However, "equity" is more  important than expressions. Because we think that the prerequisite for redemption is development for and with everyone together and at the same time to allow everyone to develop their social, economic and other states from their own positions.

We have put the utmost importance in ensuring universal  accessibility. From the beginning we tried to keep the whole project within the "Walk Up" limit, which will increase the probability of interaction among the users, strengthening the mutual relations. And these things in return will help to create and sustain a healthy, strong and democratic environment. The most popular solution to ensure universal access is to use separate ramps. But the cost of building a ramp apart from the basic structure of an affordable housing greatly reduces affordability. Therefore, it cannot be called sustainable anymore. In the meantime, we propose a fancy solution where the horizontal corridors  connecting the living units is transformed into ramps. And thus we are ensuring universal accessibility without harming affordability or sustainability  parameters. At the same time, we are encouraging the progressive mind-set of the users without burdening them with additional expenses. This  community-driven approach includes various amenities like water recycling through a retention pond, a first aid center, kids' daycare, outdoor activity zones,  multipurpose halls, light industry workshops, indoor pisciculture, aquaponics tower garden, biogas plants, waste management systems, a local market.
